Starting a Home Business: 5 Tips You Need to Know

By: Jeff Hoffman

The number of people who research online about starting a home business is on the rise. As someone who has helped many people get started successfully, here are the things you should keep in mind:

Tip #1) When starting a home business, make sure it's really a business. There are a lot of opportunities for you to choose from. When considering your choices, you must first ask yourself if it's really a business you're evaluating.

Data processing, survey completion, mystery shopping, traffic exchanges, and other such "opportunities" are likely among the many choices you're considering. These are not businesses but merely jobs in disguise.

What's the difference? Robert Kyosaki, author of "Rich Dad, Poor Dad," sums it up in one simple word: leverage. If you discontinue filling out surveys, clicking on ads, or shopping at new mystery stores, what will happen? You will not be paid, that's for sure. But if you own a business, you make money while you sleep.

Tip #2) Know your budget. You will need money in order to start a home business. Contrary to what you might be told, or read online, there is no such thing as a truly free home based business.

Set aside money for marketing. Writing articles such as this, going through a pay-per-click advertising service, and running classified advertisements in a local newspaper can take up lots of time, effort, and money.

Tip #3) You don't need to reinvent the wheel. If you're new to computer home based businesses, don't start from scratch and create your own system. It's easy to work out of your home if you begin with a proven system and build on others' work.

A common example would be franchises. Instead of starting from scratch in the fast-food business, purchasing a McDonald's franchise is much more simple. From their real-world experience they've created an operations manual. You'll succeed if you follow each step.

This is the same with creating a home business. The first step is to find and follow a proven system and ensure success with it. Once you've done that, then go invent your own new stuff, using what you've learned. Honestly, make things as easy as possible.

Tip #4) Focus on relationships. Your home based business will go nowhere without the participation of other people. Customers are, obviously, necessary. When starting a home business, you will need more than just customers.

You will need mentors to guide you in various matters. In order to cross-promote your business, you should find some joint venture partners. You need suppliers and manufacturers who produce the goods and services you sell. The possibilities are endless. Interacting with others is a critical part of all businesses, even those you do on the computer.

Tip #5) The number one factor in your success or failure in starting a home business is this: do you understand marketing? Unless someone else is going to do the majority of your marketing for free, you need to understand marketing or your budget, system, and contacts won't matter.

Your ability to find people who are interested in what you have, and your ability to offer it to them in a way that gets them to spend money, is the key to a successful home business. If you really understand marketing, it almost doesn't matter which business opportunity you choose, you'll make it work. Thus, the old proverb, "she could find a way to sell ice to an Eskimo."
